------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Check it out! A few weeks after Darwin moved in and we'd both been doing well at work, we'd saved enough to jazz up our apartment a little. Darwin and I headed to the flea market one evening after work, and picked up some fun pieces before going furniture shopping and choosing some new things too. I think this place looks amazing now; it's bright and fun, which is to our taste, and also really comfortable.

Despite looking a lot nicer, though, it's still the same cheap apartment as before. We have problems with the lights and plumbing all the time, as well as mice and cockroach infestations. Urgh. We deal with the pests ourselves, but the landlord gets called for the lights. She's not very happy to hear from us at times like this, but we're not electricians, and there's no way either Darwin or myself are risking being electrocuted trying to fix her crappy wiring.

Most of the time, though, Darwin and I are out and about enjoying the city. Darwin made a friend in a young witch called Tiffani Charm, who is apparently the daughter of two famous spellcasters.

I've found basketball at the hoop right outside our apartment building is another fun way to keep fit.

We also continue to see Basil a lot, and he and Darwin have become fast friends.

You never know what you're going to see in the city at night!

Curry for breakfast? Sure, why not! I like to think I'm getting used to the spicy food, but I don't think I'll be winning any prizes at the spice festival just yet.

On the weekend, Darwin and I decide to make the most of not having to work and have a whole day-long date. He takes me to the Bluffs first. It's raining, but it's summer so it's warm.

We talk for hours...we've always liked each other's company, and I find Darwin so easy to chat to.

Plus, he's such a romantic.

We finish our day at the Bluffs with a steamy swim.

Then, after a quick stop at the apartment to change, we head off to a fancy restaurant for a nice dinner out.

Darwin gets the chicken and I have salmon. It's delicious! A lot more expensive than our usual street food fare, but fun for a special treat.

Finally, Darwin and I drop by the romance festival on our way home. Darwin gets swept up in the spirit of it all, and proposes to me!

I wasn't ever planning to get married. It's just not something that's very important to me, and I didn't think Darwin was worried either, although he'd obviously been thinking about it long enough to get a ring. I said yes, of course! It was so special and charming, the date he arranged and then popping the question at the festival...plus, I think my parents will be happy. It's one less thing for Mum to disapprove of about my life!

Fern meets us in the city the next day so we can share our news. She was really happy for us, and promised to let Mum and Dad know.

Basil met us all for lunch so we could share the news with him in person too.

Darwin also asked him to be his best man, and of course he agreed. How lucky am I that my fiancé and brother are such good friends?

Our professional lives were progressing too. Darwin got promoted to clickbait writer, which came with a pay rise but no improvement to his work wardrobe.

Meanwhile, I got promoted to regional manager.

We celebrated as anyone in San Myshuno would, for both our engagement and the promotions...karaoke!

Basil joined us too, obviously.

And Darwin's sister met us at the bar too, to congratulate her little brother.

While I invited along Brayden, my adopted sibling. He was thrilled for us.

So was my oldest sister, Clover. She got all tearful when Darwin told her we were engaged - she'd been sure I'd never get married.
"My baby sister is engaged?! Oh, thank goodness. Welcome to the family, Darwin!"

There was plenty to celebrate in our lives. Our engagement, our careers, everything was going just as I'd planned when I moved to the city. Well...maybe not planned...but it was turning out pretty amazing. The only thing I regretted was not having a closer relationship with Mum, so when I offered to host Winterfest this year and her and Dad agreed, I was thrilled.

Darwin agreed to try cooking again, hoping he'd do better than at Harvestfest.

It was the first time Mum had actually come to see our apartment in the city. I know she's much happier out at the farm, but it meant a lot that she agreed to celebrate Winterfest here with us. Of course, many other members of our family came too, including Fern and Brayden. Hina stayed home at the farm to prepare for the smaller celebration they'd have later, after leaving our place.

We have a second room in the apartment, next to the lounge, that we don't use for much at the moment, so we decided we'd better have a tree. Clover's twin boys, my nephews Luciano and Alfred, helped me to decorate it.

Darwin joined us at the end for the finishing touches.

It looked pretty amazing once I switched the lights on.

Unfortunately Darwin is still not much of a cook...not that I'm complaining, as I can't cook at all and I'm just grateful he's willing to try! It wasn't terrible though, just perhaps not as nice as Dad's famous feasts, but we all still tucked in.

Dad has a t-shirt from when he came to Geekcon with me, not long after we moved to the city, and he wore it tonight!

Clover and Nicole also came along. Nicole is growing up really fast, she's a teenager now and she looks so much like her Mum. Maybe the boys will take after their father, Archer Delgato. Archer stayed home with his and Clover's youngest children, their second set of twins (girls this time) - Octavia and Khloe. They're only toddlers and Clover figured it'd be chaos to add them in to our already quite small apartment!

It was so special having my whole family join us. Mum and I didn't talk much, but her coming was enough. After they all headed home, Basil and Sienna, Darwin's sister, came around for presents.

Basil couldn't make it earlier because he was with his latest boyfriend for Winterfest lunch, but I think he liked the art show tickets I got him.

The magical evening ended with Sienna letting us know she's pregnant with her third child - another niece or nephew for Darwin!

He was pretty excited. I wonder if he'll want us to have a kid ourselves one day? I don't think I'm ready, but maybe I will be in future.

It's a bittersweet time for me to start thinking about whether I want to have a family, though. Fern called one night, quite late, to let me know that our parents had passed away within hours of each other. Apparently it was age-related for both of them, but they were so close it doesn't surprise me they died so close to each other.

Fern had had them laid to rest on the farm, of course. There was never any question of where they'd be buried. I'm devastated that Mum and I didn't properly heal our relationship before she passed on, but grateful for our last Winterfest together, and how she made an effort to come to the city at least once. I wish Dad could be around if I do decide to have kids, as I know what a good grandfather he was, but at least he got to enjoy Clover's brood. I have to admit, when I went back to the city that night, it was with a heavy heart and a new nostalgia for the peaceful farm where I grew up.
